Pentair Flow jet Empty Pentair Flow jet

Post  pbracer Wed May 06, 2009 10:17 am

So I bought a Pentair laminar flow jet.

The differences versus what we are building is amazing

I haven't figured out how to post an image yet so i'll refer to the pdf owners manual on the pentair page.

In the back there is a parts breakdown that shows the "guts" of the jet.

First off the output orifice is not cut chamfered or cone shaped, it is straight walled and is about 1/4" or 6mm in depth versus most of our very chamfered almost edge-like outputs.

the second big thing is the lack of any kind of sponge or filter type material. At the bottom just above the input is a plastic disc with hundreds of 1/8" or 3.5mm holes in it. Not screen-like but lots of holes that are not that close together. Based on our assumptions to use a filter/sponge to initially slow the inlet water, they just use a disk with holes. Above that they use a series of metal screens which have decreasing "gap" size or holes. In other words the weave of the screen gets tighter towards the output. Four screens in total plus the plastic disk at the bottom, and thats it. The screens ARE cone shaped with the "point" of the cone pointing towards the bottom of the jet. The final screen closest to the output orifice is very tightly woven.
Pentair Flow jet Jet_110

This is from the bottom, notice there is no sponge or filter just a series of large holes then a disk with smaller holes.
The inlet tube is off centered but not tangential
Pentair Flow jet Jet_210

The LED lense, notice the thumper attached to the bottom in the bottom right of the picture
Pentair Flow jet Jet_310

Pentair Flow jet Jet_410

Pentair Flow jet Jet_510

From the top, shows the non-chamfered output and the "light enhancing mechanism". which allows a very small amount of water to pass through the top and get reinjected into the stream to enhance the lighting by creating bubbles

Thanks for sharing! Did you take it apart, or did you just look at the manual. I don't blame you if you didn't take it apart. I would just love to see some actual photos of the stuff.

Where did you say you got it, and how much? If you don't mind me asking.

On the pdf, I wonder what the number 8 is !
And I also wonder how that light stuff works... hmz..

Number 8 in the pdf picture is the four screens of different weaves, the first one having the widest weave and the last one closest to the output is the tightest weave, almost looks to be double weaved.

I have the LED model with the light and thumper built in
The light "rod", #1 in the pdf, is tapered from about 2 inches 50mm down to 3/4" 20mm. It's made from clear plastic and has a blunt flat end that sits about 1.5" , 37mm behind the output orifice.

To me the most intersting things are the lack of any kind of sponge or filter to initially slow the input flow down, and the output orifice is not chamfered but has a straight wall.

Maybe the combination of the screens being coned shaped with the output being straight has the same effect as our straight straws and chamfered output.

the cost was 600 USD and got them (2) from poolsupplyworld.com. I am currently trying to find an online source for the various parts, such as the screens (#8 ) and the output plate (#12). I want to try to put them in my own "nozzle" to see if my results are similar to theirs.

Isn't that patent more along the lines of what most of us have built already, the straws etc? As I understand it, yours doesn't use straws at all, but more of a weave like a window screen that gets smaller and smaller.

edit - per the preivous edit this post is moot.

Is there no straws inside at all ?

Sounds interesting how this is build, both the led module, and the screens..
But I still wonder the distance from the led output and to the nozzle..
And I still wonder what weaves is Razz

plz pictures Very Happy

Oh there they are..

Nice.. thanx for the pictures !

But very strange design!
I like the top (and the big blank stuff there is where the lights come out?)

Maybe it`s possible to use something like this to the "top" filter :

Pentair Flow jet 23790_PE099056_S4

Anyway very interesting setup....
I would like more pictures Very Happy

The unit is not "serviceable" so I can't really get any inside pictures to show you without "breaking" the case open

There are four of those screens inside there. all are cone shaped and they get progressively tighter towards the output. In other words if you look at this thing as a whole.

It goes from the bottom up:

Water inlet
a couple of large holes
dead space
a disk with lots of smaller holes (see white disk in pictures)
dead space
first screen
dead space
second screen with holes smaller that first screen
dead space
third screen with holes smaller than the second screen
dead space
fourth and last screen with very tiny holes smaller than the third screen
dead space
output orifice

The light engine is very interesting. I was working on something similiar just a lot smaller. Do you know what drives the light engine yet?

Yes very interesting images Very Happy
Thanx allot for uploading them !

I still wonder about that light module.. seems nice !
Is that fiber optic?

And is it possible to just buy only that light module ??

I dont think i need to ask, but there was no cutter on this.

My guess is that the light engine has the LED (or multiple LED's) underneath that glass/plastic part and the plastic/glass piece is an optical coupler that joins up with the glass/plastic rod.

I'm guessing that it is a plastic like PMMA.

Light engine is LED

They have a version that has just Fiber input port with the same plastic rod.

Light engine also has a thumper which can be seen in the picture as well.

No cutter as this is being sold by a pool products company, not really a garden fountain company, and their expectation is that the water is to land in the pool.

Does that needle for the bubble or water injector actually pierce the laminar stream or does it just shoot the water/air onto the stream?

Wow, thank you so much for posting this, very interesting. I new the patent and read it earlier, but i couldnt understand how this works, now its glass clear. Very Happy INFO: The LED glass road is made from a solid piece of Plexiglass and turned on a lathe, i tryed this with smaller parts, and this is not a big deal. Turn and polish.

Can you controll the "light enhancing mechanism"? The Watter drops? or is it runnimg all the time?

Thank you

The LED engine is a somewhat controllable via a series of on/off power switching as per the pdf

The light enhancer can be controlled via the screw on the top which "pinches" the hose and lets varying amounts of water through from full off to full on

So the light enhancer remove the need to fill some other colored liquid fluid into the water to have some extra light effect Wink

How does the light enhancer affect the stream? (i.e. does it completely ruin the laminar stream?)

The light enhancer does ruin the laminar look of the flow, but that is how it works, by injecting bubbles into the flow for the light to reflect off of.

If the flow is truly laminar, then you can't light it, you can only use it to transport light. You have to have something in the flow to reflect the light and they inject the bubbles for that to happen. the thumper works with and without the light enhancer so you can have a totaly laminar flow and just thump for the occassional light burst, or you can use the enhancer and have a lighted flow and the burst also.

I am using this as an output from my pool pump so i can't use any kind of enhancing liquid
