Here is a supplier for a variety of diameters of jacketed end glow fiber. (March 2010)

http://stores.ebay.com/funthings4uwarehouse

I ordered 100FT OF 3.0MM END GLOW JACKETED FIBER OPTIC CABLE: $69.95

I also ordered the 120v 5 Watt LED Fiber Optical illuminator & Wireless Remote: $34.95

The fiber illuminator has 1" diameter bushing to secure the fiber and it uses a single 5w LED.

Can I use this ? (mario what do you think)

Is it correct that the price is only 36$ for 50FT ??
That is to cheap to be true ?

I think I did pay like 30$ last year, and that was only each FT !

Yeah, I think that is the stuff that you want. It is PMMA which is great for underwater applications.

Cheap end glow fiber Empty Jacketed?

Post  iburton Mon Apr 05, 2010 3:47 pm

How important is it really that the fiber be jacketed?

The jacket is mostly there for protection of the fiber. If the fiber is exposed and it gets a nick in it then the fiber will lose some light. It really just depends on how you plan on having the light arranged.

I have a really short fiber length. I am planning on having my LEDs mounted to the bottom of the nozzle (exterior). If you have your LED's anywhere else, you really should have the jacketed fibers.

I purchased some unsheathed fiber from a reputable company that was supposed to be end glow type. When applying bright LED's to the end I see some significant light coming from the sides from the first 6" the light coming out the end is still bright, but I am not sure if this is "normal." Any thoughts?

Yes, you will get loss from every inch of the fiber. As long as it is still bright at the end then you will be fine.

FYI, the better polished the ends of the fiber are the more light will enter.
