Nozzles machined from acrylic or even glass ? Empty Nozzles machined from acrylic or even glass ?

Post  Steven in CA Fri Aug 20, 2010 11:43 am

I was thinking randomly of a waterjet design that would be comletely clear.

Maybe constructed from glass or acrylic. This got me wondering if there have been any discussions on machining a nozzle from glass or acrylic and what, if any experience folks have had.

I was envisioning a thick glass surface (bottom of a long cylinder) and then utilizing a diamond core drill (which I've used successfully on glass before) to remove a plug and make the basic hole. Then, simply grinding continuously with a diamond abrasive of some type until I achieve the desired "knife edge" -- would certainly be tricky to do and the resulting edge would be very delicate. Does anyone recall any attempts to make a "glass" nozzle ?

Acrylic seems like a more likely material - has anyone simply machined a nozzle out of acylic ???

YES Acrylic have been used before Smile
Actually I think the first laminar nozzle EVER build by Mark Fuller was acrylic !

More easy to see the waterflow inside the nozzle.
I think you should stay away from glass.

I did try a glass top plate on my first attempt, and it did break because of the water pressure.

thank you for the reply !

I had thought that Fuller's first design was an acrylic tube and end caps but with a machined metal nozzle insert in the top end cap.
WHen I am speaking about the "nozzle" I am refering to only the exit hole and the material comprises the "knife edge" .

I am confident that a nozzle enclosure could be made out of acrylic or possibly even glass (the stress loads would have to be very carefully managed to prevent it from breaking) - but, my question was more about the actually nozzle itself . . . and whether anyone had experience machining the nozzle out of acrylic or glass.

OH . . bad luck !

THis must have required some considerable time to carefully grind out the nozzle (?)

I did not make the hole, I told the "glass dudes" to drill the hole in a V shape for me Smile
I think it was 4mm glass, the best is to use copper\alu for a brass ring for the output hole.

Glass is to messy and it WILL break...
