This is my second version of the laminar nozzle. My first attempt was a 4" diameter nozzle, it worked, but the total jump was what I wanted. I needed MORE! So I built this behemoth! I think I can cut down some of the length, but since I didn't want to fail again I included almost everything I could in the pipe.

I'm already working on the lighting, and the cutting mechanism. I hope to have a cutting test this next weekend.

I've also posted a lot of my information/finding at my blog , http://www.mad-laboratory.com click the link at the top that says laminar nozzle fountain, or the tag that says fountain or laminar.

I love how clear and nice the water is on the video !!
Do you want to share some pictures\video what is inside the nozzle, and how its build.. ? Smile

How will you make the cutter, and how are you going to place the light Smile

and one last question, where are you going to place the laminar nozzle when it`s completed ?

Cheers

I posted this on my blog a couple of days ago, and as I was re-reading the forum I realized that I haven't posted it here. Anyway here is my verison of the cutter.

http://mad-laboratory.com/2009/04/08/laminar-nozzle-cutter-mechanism-test-1/

It works....mostly. There is some splashback into the brass nozzle that gets picked up by the stream and that's why I am getting the second anomaly in the water. The first anomaly everyone seems to get that one except the professional ones that use a water jet sprayer to cut the water (too expensive for my low budget fountain).

It's been suggested that I need to put a baffle on the brass nozzle to make sure that the splashback isn't interfering with the stream. That's definitely what I am going to try.

nice blog, and nice to se the video of the setup !

I must start to figure out a way to make a "perfect" cutter..
BTW: Why is a water beam into the laminar so expensive?

How high must the water be to cut out the laminar flow?

I think this is something I need to test... as it must be allot more easy to have a simple water to cut off the laminar..
Instead of allot of solenoid stuff Wink

You need a hi pressure water stream, and a separate pump for this i think, and a special nozzle to produce a cut off waterstream. The system is the same like in a manual carwash. But the system sounds interesting. Its not as silent as the cutter, maybe your neighbors will not like it. Bsch.... tsssssss .... Bschhhh .... all day long, like in a carwash.

What is wrong with your cutter test? looks good for me.

Have nice easter weekend.

Here is a sample of the speed cutting test. I'm not sure it is as fast as some of the ones I've seen. I think that may be due to how I wired them up. I think that will be an easy fix as soon as I can get some of the microcontrollers working for me. I
http://mad-laboratory.com/2009/04/11/laminar-nozzle-speed-cutting-test/

So I added a baffle to my nozzle and it's working a lot better as you will seen in the video. I think the biggest problem that I am having now is the due to the improper drain for the water. Also there is a small leak that is making it way onto the stream causing it to break up.

Check it out, and let me know what you think and where some of the improvements can be made.

the cutter seems good.. but not sure if It`s moving fast enough ?

Seems like you have some splash on the beam.. hmz..

I still try to figure out how that jumping jets in Las Vegas was so DAMN perfect !!
They was like glass tubes flying in the air, with a perfect beginning and end cut !
So it is possible, just need to figure out how it`s done Wink

But I did like the setup you have , I think it`s hard to build the moving parts, and to mount the solenoids p Rolling Eyes

The One in Vegas, at the Bellagio Hotel are controlled by hi pressure water stream, controlled thru a Electric valve, very fast. You can search thru the patents online Link Patents online int the states you will find it. The company calls
Wet design http://www.wetdesign.com/ , in LA. Maybe you find more out than me. Smile

Please let us know if you find something usable.

I did yesterday a test with my garden hose, and its not powerful enough, so you need a pump or some kind of this guys My contribution to the group. 7701_1
My neighbor has one of theys, maybe i test it. But its noisy ..... Bschhhh tssss schhhh tsss krrrrr bsssss.

Haha.. a high pressure water cleaner Razz
I think that will be much noise Wink
I guess we can forget about that idea...

Btw: I did not talk about the Outside water fountain !!
But inside the Bellagio hotel there was a small "park" ..
And they had 3-4 small jumping jets there..

You did not notice them first.. but suddenly the water did JUMP in the trees Smile
Pretty nice oh yea.. but the beam was so incredibly perfect !
No tail, no drop nothing.. just a perfect beam !

So it HAVE to be a way to do it

What i mean is starting at Tomeline 2:23 to 2:40 if you watch again and again, you can see the uncut is not perfect and has a little tail! So 100% Uncut is not possible. The Nature of Water dont let us do a Perfect uncut. But i really would like to know a better solution ..... Basketball lets play arround with this problem, someone find a solution thats close to perfect. Very Happy

I finished my first test for the lighting. I'm pretty pleased with my results. I'm just using a single Rebel Endor Tri RGB LED. It's not as good as Mario's results, but they are a good start. The good thing is is that I am going to just use one LED per nozzle. I've designed a "lighting core" that uses use 3 fiber optics. The LEDs or the Rebel Endor is placed at the bottom of the lighting core below the nozzle.

The problem that I have is that the stream is too clear and is transmitting the light too efficiently and not producing a nice light effect during the day or in light.

http://mad-laboratory.com/2009/05/11/341/

enjoy! Ideas for making the light shine better?

I know, pbracer, purchased a nozzle and on that nozzle it has a bubble injector. I think that sounds interesting.

Hello John, Really nice! Yes it looks good! Great Job! If you like, do not use a bubble injector, it destroys your stream you have so long worked on! Use a simple Water enhancer, just a drop or two, and you want believe your eyes. I use a fluid, that normally is used to drill holes in industries, to cool or smear in this process. I have brown concentrate, when i mix it up with water it gets milky, this one i have is Biological and you can drink it if you like, no poison. In daylight you can't see a difference to normal water, because i use just a little bit of this fluid. Try this and your light will shine your stream 50% more. But sure more light power, and as close a possible to the outlet, the more your arch will Glow in the dark.

Sory, i buy this over here in a shop. In the states they call it "coolant, or cutting fluid", for use when you work on a lathe, or a big drill press. There are some products with no poison, biostatic agent, and when mixed with Water it looks white like milk. Ask for it before you buy. It's chap.

Maybe you can use anti-freeze that is used on the cars window washer fluid ??
It`s just anti-freeze water with blueish color? Smile

John, how about trying a water scratcher? Just touch the edge of the water with a small pin or pointed nail where it exits the nozzle and see what that does. I know that some commercial devices use three, small, pointed, adjustable screws placed around the nozzle to scratch the stream to make it more visible.
